Current compensation benchmarks for critical care nursing leadership positions nationwide. Built from real placements, real offers, and real conversations with hospital CFOs. Ready to find your next role? Browse open positions or read our job search guide.
This is a guide, not a guarantee. The ranges below are general benchmarks drawn from real placements and conversations with hospital finance teams across the country. Actual compensation varies based on hospital size, patient volume, case acuity, geographic location, and the candidate's experience and credentials. Two nurses with the same title can see meaningfully different offers depending on the facility and market. Use these numbers as a starting point, not a ceiling.
What Drives Compensation Higher
Facility size and bed count: a 700-bed trauma center commands higher compensation than a 100-bed community hospital.
Geographic location: coastal metros and high-cost-of-living areas pay 15-25% above national midpoints.
Unit acuity: high-acuity CVICU and Neuro ICU units command higher pay than lower-acuity MICU assignments.
Scope of responsibility: managing multi-unit assignments (MICU plus SICU) increases compensation versus managing a single unit.
System-level reporting: leaders reporting to a CNO or CFO command higher packages than those reporting to a department director.
